Colourful post-impressionist oil painting of a woman by French artist Charles Robert Bellenfant (1896-1983).  The woman in Red,signed and dated in the bottom right corner, 1943. A woman wears a red coat as she sits reading a newspaper or magazine, its an unusal slightly fauvist eye catching painting with bright hues.

Signed: Bellenfanct 1942 Charles Robert Bellenfant (1896-1982) was member of the Société des artistes français, he exhibited a Nude (painting) and a drawing Hôtel rue Juiverie, Lyon, at the Salon des artistes français in 1929. In 1931, he took part in the Salon d'Automne, exhibiting two decorative panels entitled L'été and two canvases, Bar sur le port de Calvi and Place de l'Église à Menton.

A teacher (1937) and then Divisional Inspector of drawing in Paris schools, he is also known for his illustrations in the Père Castor series. (source: wikipedia)

Condition:  This painting has craquelure throughout but everything appears stable.   The frame is more than likely the original, it also has imperfections throughout including renovations and indentations.
