Dark and moody antique French landscape/riverscape early to mid 1800's in its original frame, French school.  This delightfully unusual oil painting on stretched canvas has wonderful depth and sits  in what is likely to be its original frame.  A woman lies on a river bank close to a grazing sheep.  Shaded by large leafy trees, she turns away from the three barely visible dancing water nymphs who gain seclusion from the darkness of the grey rocks.  It's a romantic and symbolic painting where your eye is first caught by the leafy fullness of the trees and the amazing depth of this painting in darkened hues and later when you have discovered the nymphs on the darkness, you gaze towards the light and the fortress wall on the left.

Condition: This wonderful old painting, is in overall good antique condition but you should expect imperfections associated with age, such as some areas of missing paint, thinning of the canvas and small renovations.  The frame is likely to be the original, there are faults throughout, such as missing plaster, indentations, visible nails at the corners and renovations throughout. We prefer to keep original frames and their paintings together, however, it is possible that during transportation the frame, which is fragile, it may loose some of its moulding/plaster, this can can glued back in place very easily.  We will pack this frame securely and protect it with polystyrene edging, manufactured for the safe transport of frames, but for the sake of any doubt, you are buying the painting and the frame comes free of charge and should there be any damage on arrival, the frame cannot be replaced or refunded.  If your painting and or frame is damaged by the shipping company, it is of course fully insured.
