ABOUT THE ARTIST: Léonie Humbert-Vignot, whose full name was Léonie Pierrette Marguerite was born in Lyon on February 17, 1878 and died on September 5, 1960 at the age of 82 in the same city.
She was a post-impressionist artist, but her early works also bear the mark of realism, transcribing her experiences of the harshness of the world. She came from a modest background, her mother being a seamstress and her father being little known. In addition to her artistic career, she volunteered as a nurse during the two World Wars, which earned her the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor on December 9, 1951 by the French government. Her traumatic experiences during these wars would strongly influence her work, giving it an often dark and tortured tone.Léonie trained at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Lyon, then at the Académie Julian in Paris, where she studied under several famous artists such as Alexandre François Bonnardel, Marie Laforge, Marcel Baschet, Henri Royer and Édouard Toudouze. Her work was inspired by many artists and writers, including Rembrandt, Émile Zola and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. After her studies, she began exhibiting in 1896, first in Lyon, then in Paris. Her works, mainly nudes, portraits and war scenes, but also flowers after the Great War, reflect the realities of her time. She mainly painted women, whether they were family members or portraits of gypsies. The latter theme represents the majority of her work.
