A wonderful old portrait painting of a woman reading in a library.  It's an unusual, interesting and colourful painting.  The dark background of a large mural over a panelled wall adds interest and only serves to highlight the woman and her fabulous dress, adorned with pink ribbons, which is beautifully painted.  A folded thick velvet throw covers the oak table to add to the composition.
It's painted on a canvas with a printed label of Carpentier and Deforge, an artist's supply shop in Montmartre which used this particular label between 1863 -1868 so it makes it fairly easy to put a date on this painting.
Stretched canvas on a wood frame, 25.5ins x 21.5ins or 65cms x 54.5cms
Condition:  Although not without minor imperfections throughout, this painting is in good condition for the age.  It deserves a frame.
