This gem of an oil painting on stretched canvas is simply stunning. It sits within a heavy gilt frame. A tasteful composition, the nude reclines gracefully, laying on a bed with her head resting on pillows. The only thing she wears is her strawberry blond hair, which is tied up to reveal her neck. The renowned artist has used elements of light falling on the model to sculpt the body, along with a myriad of skin hues which illustrates the varied tones of flesh with impasto thickened paint being applied by brush giving a textured canvas.

Léon Galand was awarded a bursary by the town of Montpellier and studied under E. Michel, Delauney, G. Moreau, Cormon and Blanc. He exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1904. He received numerous awards, including: second prize in the Prix de Rome; a commendation in 1903 at the Salon des Artistes Français; a bronze medal in 1909; and a gold medal. He was decorated by the Légion d'Honneur.
Galand is also known for his portraits as well as nudes. He also illustrated Aline, Reine de Golconde.

Condition: This painting is in very good condition overall, age related faults such as some slightly yellowing varnish. The frame has had renovations throughout, particularly at the corners. Overall its a truly beautiful, visual and tasteful piece.
