Antique French landscape oil painting in traditional Barbizon style, attributed to Louis Guy (1824-1888)  A typical French Barbizon style bucolic painting.  Authentic traditional French School oil painting, well painted with colourful trees/woodland and sky.  This is a rare treasure from the 1800's in its original frame.  The wood board is textured to the touch.

Condition: The painting, although not perfect, is in very good antique condition.  The frame is quite likely the original, it is in good condition for the age but you should expect imperfections throughout such as losses of gilt and moulding.  In particular the sleeve of the frame, next to the painting on the bottom right is splintered (see photos).
Signed: no, but attributed to Louis Guy (1824-1888) Born in Lyon on 8 March 1824, died in Lyon on 17 February 1888.
Jean Baptiste Louis Guy was a pupil of Claude Bonnefond and Jean Antoine Duclaux at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon from 1839 to 1846. He exhibited at the Salon de Lyon from 1840, then at the Salon de Paris from 1868. In 1871, he was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he taught Augustin Pierre Chenu, Armand Bernard, Frank Bail, Charles Joseph Beauverie and Charles Montlevault. He was also director of a municipal art school.
His paintings are full of movement, dense and filled with dark colours. Guy painted in watercolours and was a lithographer. He produced around 70 colour engravings after C. Billier, L. Bortel and Soulary. F. Desvernay brought together 47 of his plates in an album entitled Louis Guy: Peintre et aquafortiste. Guy also produced the cartoons for the stained glass windows in the church of St-Louis de La Guillotière in Lyon, painted caricatures and illustrated the works of Alexis Rousset. (Benezit)
