This is a beautiful old 19th century French Barbizon oil painting on stretched canvas in a very heavy, ornate wood and stucco/gilt frame by French artist Alfred Koechlin (1845-1878).    A rocky edged river setting with a large tree in autumn colours juxtaposed against a swirling sky.  Turquoise blue waters and blue hills divided by poplar trees.   It's a very traditional French school painting, calming and easy on the eye...

Overall size: 29ins x 23.5ins or 73cms x 60cms (approx)

Date: 1879

Condition: This painting has been renovated and relined in 1979 (see photo of the receipt) on the one hundreth anniversary/centenary of the painting.  There is some craquelure and imperfections as you would expect in a painting of this age.  It's frame is from the same time period and likely to be the original.  It's very heavy and has losses of moulding and plaster throughout.  Please study the photos carefully as they form part of the description.  

Signed: Unsigned but the renovator has stated on the invoice that a signature was on the back of the original painting.  Alfred Koechlin (1845-1878)
