Raoul Dosque (1860 -1937)

Raoul was a painter of landscapes. He was born in Cenon-La Bastide in 1860. Cenon is a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in south west France. It's on the east side of the beautiful city of Bordeaux. He was very active in the area of Bouscat, Bordeaux. He was a pupil of Bazin and Rapin and he made his debut at the Société des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux in 1882.

A pupil of Thenot and Chabry, Dosque was greatly influenced by the art of Louis Auguste Auguin, and delivered a beautiful series of ocean views painted in Soulac-sur-Mer, usually known as Soulac a place dear to the Master. Soulac is a commune in the department of Gironde, it's a seaside resort on the Côte d'Argent, on the peninsula of Médoc, 12 km from Royan and 86 km from Bordeaux.

Throughout his life, with a few exceptions, the artist remained faithful to the local landscape, showing a predilection for the Bay of Arcachon, of which he exhibited various aspects in Paris and Bordeaux.

In 1911, he joined the Atelier group, which paid tribute to him by organising a retrospective of his work at his death.

Raoul Dosque's works are in the Musée des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux and the Musée Borda in Dax.
