Jules Emmanuel Valadon (1826 - 1900)

Jules was born in Paris on the 10th October 1826. He was the son of Michel Emmanuel Valadon, an architect and builder and Josephine Adele Royer. He painted portraits, garden scenes and still lifes. He began studying at the School of Beaux Arts in Paris in 1846, most likely under under Léon Cogniet, Drolling and Lehmann. He made his Paris Salon debut in 1857, going on to win a bronze medal at the Salon in 1880 and a silver medal in 1886. A number of his paintings enjoyed popular success, among them Gipsy Artist (1857 Salon), Corner of the Garden and Peasant. His still-lifes are distinguished by their virtuosity and attention to detail. One of his paintings, of Alphonse Osbert is hung in the Musee d'orsey Paris.
