Jean was born in Russia and died in Paris. He was active in France and Italy. A painter of genre scenes, landscapes, landscapes with figures, seascapes and flowers. Jean exhibited at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1866, 1875 and 1878. In his Provençal, Italian and Russian landscapes, colours dissolve and fade into one another and the figures are for the most part merely suggested. His paintings are in a number of museums, namely Béziers, 'Pins maritimes à Antibes', Nice 'L’embouchure de la Roya 1869', Roanne, 'Vallée houillère près de la Ricamarie' et 'Femme au bain' and Troyes, 'Vue de Raguse'.
