Georges Marchou (1898 - 1984)

Georges was a painter from Bordeaux, a beautiful city on the south west of France. He was a student of Ernest Laurent at the School of Fine Arts in Paris.

Georges was influenced by works by Gauguin, Sérusier, Vuillard, Bonnard and Van Gogh and the group named the Nabis who were a number of young French artists active in Paris from the late 1880's until the early 1900's. The Nabis played a large part in the transition from impressionism and academic art to abstract art, symbolism and the other early movements of modernism.

Georges was considered a fauvist, a movement typified by the work of Matisse and characterised by vivid colours and the free treatment of form, resulting in a vibrant and decorative effect.
